Low Carb Thanksgiving Recipes

Thanksgiving is an American holiday deeply rooted in tradition and history. But it is also a holiday that is surrounded by pounds of turkey, ham or duck, mounds of mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce, casserole dishes filled with green beans, sweet potatoes and cornbread and of course copious amounts of dessert. With all that food covering your holiday table it’s easy to understand that putting on ten to fifteen pounds of holiday weight is actually fairly common this time of the year. Especially when you factor in left overs. But your Thanksgiving day celebrations don’t have to put a dent in your fitness progress. This year try these low carb Thanksgiving recipes to keep your stomach satisfied but slim.

Low Carb Dinner Alternatives

There are a few valid reasons that so many of us add carbohydrates to our dinners. First of all, that’s the way our parents did it and the way their parents did it before them, so that’s what we were taught. Another reason we eat carbs at dinner time is because they help to fill us up so that we don’t become hungry again before bed. Of course, this theory only holds true if you’re eating complex carbs at dinner, as simple carbs will fill you up quickly but keep you coming back for more throughout the night. We want to help you kick this bad habit though with a few dinner time carb alternatives.

ISOPASTA RICE GUMBO

Serves 8

Call your friends and get ready for a late night around the dinner table with this hearty, Cajun crowd-pleaser! Faster and less fussy than a traditional gumbo, I’ve given this savory recipe’s roux a makeover with soy and oat flours, so you can enjoy a gluten free dinner. Shrimp, chicken, and sausage add huge flavor and lots of protein, while our ISOPASTA Rice soaks up all that great Creole sauce.

Drink Recommendation: Beer! (Preferably Turbodog by Abita) Cheers!

I hope you enjoy this delicious addition to your healthy ISO lifestyle!

PUMPKIN AND SAGE SAUCE WITH ISOPASTA FUSILLI

Serves 6

This smooth, seasonal sauce pairs beautifully with any of our protein-rich ISOPASTAs and gives you all the comfort of a cream sauce without all the fat. Pumpkin and butternut squash lend huge amounts of vitamins A and C, while Canadian turkey bacon gives you little pops of salty texture. I used ISOPASTA Fusilli for this savory, satisfying, low-fat dinner, but feel free to try it with our ISOPASTA Rice, too, for a great, easy, impressive risotto!

Wine Recommendation: This creamy pumpkin sauce is well-paired with a crisp Pinot Grigio. Cheers!

I hope you enjoy this delicious addition to your healthy ISO lifestyle!

PASTITSIO PENNE

Serves 6

Pastitsio is an amazing Greek pasta dish with lots of ground beef, layers of creamy béchamel sauce, and tons of carbs.  It’s comfort food at its best, but I wanted to take this old favorite of mine and give it a new twist with our amazing ISOPASTA Penne.  There’s some new flavors, some new proteins, and a good dose of feta cheese to bring lots of flavor without the sodium or calories.  Best of all, this pasta bake keeps well for days, making it a great fit for your meal prep lifestyle.

Wine Recommendation:  A big, loud Cab will pair amazingly with this hearty dish.  Cheers!

I hope you enjoy this delicious addition to your healthy ISO lifestyle!

MEDITERRANEAN SKILLET FISH AND ISOPASTA RICE

MEDITERRANEAN SKILLET FISH AND ISOPASTA RICE

Serves 4

When I came across the idea of cooking fish in a skillet on the grill, I was sold.  This easily-prepared meal is a real show-stopper to bring to the table, and best of all, it keeps amazingly well.  A hearty fish like cod not only has amazing stores of omega-3’s, vitamin B12, and protein, but it keeps remarkably well without drying out from reheating in a microwave.  This means that you can enjoy your fish and ISOPASTA Rice all week, stored in our Isolator Fitness Meal Prep Containers, making this a great dish for your health and your meal prep lifestyle!

Drink Recommendation:  A cold, crisp Chardonnay will compliment this zesty fish skillet well.  Cheers!

I hope you enjoy this delicious addition to your healthy ISO lifestyle!

FAUX FRIED RICE

Serves 2

I developed this fast, easy, flexible recipe out of a frustration with traditional fried rice – a meal no one ever walks away feeling good from!  The white rice and high sodium content crash your body out fast, leaving you more likely to snooze on the couch than lead an active life.  For me, my version made with leftover quinoa is simple comfort food at its best – it’s salty, it’s spicy, it’s savory, and it packs an amazing protein punch that fuels you through your day.  I sometimes add in a diced maple chicken sausage patty for even more protein and a little touch of sweetness.  You can make this dish your own, too, with leftover cooked veggies or chicken, whatever you might have in your fridge that appeals to you.  And don’t worry about what time of day it is – this “fried rice” is amazing for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

ISOPASTA PENNE WITH PEANUT SAUCE AND SMOKED TURKEY

Serves 4

This peanut sauce is one of my favorites. Besides the added protein, the flavor can’t be beat! Use it in this recipe, but feel free to use it on any of our ISOPASTAs or as a great dipping sauce for chicken. The smoked turkey breast adds great flavor and texture to an easy meal that will store beautifully in your Isolator Fitness Meal Prep Containers.

I hope you enjoy this delicious addition to your healthy ISO lifestyle!

Drink Recommendation: A light prosecco will pair beautifully with this rich, savory sauce. Cheers!
